Habitats and Species of Principal Importance in England

The England Biodiversity List is a list of flora, fauna and habitats considered by the Secretary of State to be of principal importance for conserving biodiversity. Fifty-six habitats and 941 species of principal importance are included on the S41 list.

The publication of the England Biodiversity List satisfies the requirements of Section 41 of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities (NERC) Act 2006 for the conservation of biodiversity.

The S41 list will be used to guide decision-makers such as public bodies, including local and regional authorities, in implementing their duty under section 40 of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006 "to have regard" to the conservation of biodiversity in England, when carrying out their normal functions.
